Hidden in northeastern Brazil lies one of the most surreal landscapes on Earth: vast white sand dunes filled with crystal-clear freshwater lagoons. At first glance, it looks like a desert. But when the rain comes, thousands of turquoise lagoons appear between the dunes, creating a scene that feels almost unreal.

Welcome to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in the world.

In this guide, you’ll learn when to visit, how to get there, where to stay, and what to do to make the most of your trip.

Where Are Lençóis Maranhenses?

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is located in northeastern Brazil, in the state of Maranhão.

The closest airport is in São Luís, the state capital. From there, travelers usually take a 4 to 5-hour transfer by car to reach the gateway towns of the national park.

Many visitors combine their trip to Lençóis with a night in São Luís before heading to the dunes.

If you’re traveling with a travel planner, the entire logistics — airport transfers, accommodations, and tours — can be organized in advance so you can focus on enjoying the journey.

Discover São Luís & the São João Festival

Before heading to the dunes, it’s worth spending some time exploring São Luís.

The city’s historic center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its colorful colonial buildings and Portuguese-influenced architecture.

If you visit in June, you’ll experience one of Brazil’s most vibrant cultural celebrations: the São João Festival.

During this time, the city comes alive with:

  • Traditional dances like Bumba Meu Boi

  • Live music and folklore performances

  • Colorful costumes and street parties

  • Delicious regional food.

The atmosphere is contagious and gives travelers a beautiful introduction to Brazilian culture.

Gateway Towns to Explore the Park

To visit Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, travelers usually stay in one of three main towns. Each offers a different experience.

Barreirinhas

The most popular and accessible base.

Barreirinhas has the largest selection of hotels, restaurants, and organized tours, making it ideal for first-time visitors.

Atins

A small fishing village located where the river meets the ocean.

Atins is famous for its rustic charm, relaxed atmosphere, and kite surfing scene. It’s perfect for travelers looking for something quieter and more authentic.

Santo Amaro

The closest town to some of the park’s most spectacular lagoons.

Santo Amaro remains more local and less developed, offering raw beauty and fewer tourists.

If you have time, combining two of these towns during your trip is a great way to experience different perspectives of the park.

How the Lagoons Are Formed

Despite its desert-like appearance, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park receives heavy rainfall between January and June.

During this rainy season, water accumulates between the dunes, forming lagoons that can reach up to 3 meters deep.

But why doesn’t the water simply drain into the ground?

Beneath the sand lies a natural clay layer, which works like a giant sponge, preventing the water from filtering away.

The dunes themselves were formed by fine quartz sand carried inland by strong winds, although much of this sand originally comes from the nearby Parnaíba River.

Over thousands of years:

  • Ocean currents transported sediments along the coast

  • Winds sculpted the sand into the famous crescent-shaped dunes

  • Rainwater filled the spaces between them

Scientists estimate the dunes are around 10,000 years old.

Before the dunes formed, the region was partially covered by the ocean. As the sea slowly retreated, new ecosystems appeared — first mangroves, then coastal vegetation known as restinga, which is adapted to sandy soil.

During the dry season, the lagoons slowly evaporate — but thanks to the clay layer, they remain for several months.

This unique combination of desert landscape and freshwater lagoons exists nowhere else on Earth.

Best Time to Visit Lençóis Maranhenses

The best time to visit is from June to September.

During these months, the lagoons are:

Practical Travel Tips

Before visiting Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, keep these tips in mind.

What to bring:

  • Sunscreen

  • Hat and sunglasses

  • Light clothing

  • Water shoes or sandals

The sun is very strong, and the sand can get extremely hot during the day.

Limited internet connection

Some areas — especially Atins and Santo Amaro — have limited signal.
